2nd edition of MIC Conference "Modern Technologies Closer To Us"
We started very early in the morning. A cup of coffee
helped much.

13.05.2008. The second year in a row the walls of Poznań PAS Science Centre - the headquarters of PSNC and Microsoft Innovation Center in Poznań - hosted the organizers and participants of the annual MIC Conference entitled "Modern Technologies Closer To Us". The conference is a great opportunity to present to the public the MIC tasks, the current research work within the project, as well as the latest technological solutions introduced by Microsoft.

The organizers started the last preparations before 7 a.m. - in order to open the registration desk at 9 a.m. and make the conference room available for those who arrived early. Thanks to our intensive work there were no queues and the conference could have started punctually. The invitation speech was given by Ph. D.Norbert Meyer (PSNC) and Michał Jaworski (Microsoft Poland). The representative of our main partner appealed for competing not against the best in Poland, but in the world.

The next part of the agenda was the presentation of our Special Guest, Tomasz Kopacz (Microsoft Poland). Tomasz prepared the speech on the latest Microsoft solution for the HPC market (HPC Server 2008). The lecture was interested not only because Microsoft is rather matched with solutions like Windows or Office by the majority of the users, but also because High Performance Computing is the domain of Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center, that was the conference organizer.
The organizers were satisfied with the number of
participants

After the coffee break (and press conference - during which our guests from Microsoft Poland, the PSNC representatives and the Poznań University of Technology team with their secure remote telemedical consultation system TELESFOR were interviewed the most intensively), the participants were invited to the next lectures. The first of them was the presentation of Gerard Frankowski and Błażej Miga from PSNC Security Team, devoted to the threats that are met by everyone who is going to go shopping through the Web.

Several consecutive shorter presentations were aimed to describe the latest hosting service, offered by MIC to scientific research groups, university departments, non-governmental organizations as well as individual users. Jerzy Mikołajczak and Marek Zawadzki (PSNC Supercomputing Department) introduced how to use the service and described the installation of the basic components building the hosting platform: Windows Server 2003 operating system, Microsoft IIS Web server and the content management system - Windows Sharepoint Services. Then Cezary Mazurek and Damian Niemir (PSNC Networking Services Department) gave an interesting "live conversation" on how to build and easily manage functional websites using templates prepared by PSNC. Finally, the representatives of PSNC Security Team, Marcin Jerzak and - again - Błażej Miga outlined the subject of securing the Windows Server 2003 system, IIS Web server and appropriate configuring ASP.NET. The presentation will be especially useful for these institutions that would like to use the option of providing their own server for hosting websites.

Every participation was given his or her own access code that allowed him or her to register a free account in the studentlive.pl domain.
After a tasteful lunch the presentations were focused on applying the technologies offered by Microsoft in interesting interactive applications. Robert Cecko and Marek Flejszman (PSNC Network Services Department) talked about the 2.0 release of Silverlight and presented a visually attractive video player application that may be implemented in 10 minutes (which could be seen directly by the participants). The last presentation of today was the lecture of Bartłomiej Prędki (Poznań University of Technology - the Institute of Computing Science) that described the current status, functionality and development plans of the secure remote telemedical consultations system - TELESFOR.
Another presentation: Błażej
Miga (speaking) and Marcin
Jerzak (both PSNC)

The most tenacious of out guests (however, we have not detected so called users leak, that is a serious problem of many conference organizers) could then return the surveys given to them earlier and take part in a contest with attractive prizes. What was very interesting - despite of doing his best, our drawing man chose the surveys given by those who were sitting to the left side of the room. Maybe the right side participants were a bit shy and returned less surveys? ;)
The conference was closed by Norbert Meyer (PSNC Supercomputing Department) who thanked the participants as well. After the exhibition of TELESFOR and a trip to the PSNC supercomputing room, the 2nd MIC Conference became the past. How it will look like the next year? We will see.
We encourage you to take a look at the presentations. We will do our best to make the webcasts available as soon as possible.
